Will window tint affect my car’s defroster, GPS, or
electronics?
With our professional-grade films, you shouldn’t experience any issues. Modern carbon and
ceramic tints are signal-friendly, meaning they contain no metal that would interfere with
electronics. Here’s a breakdown:
● Rear Defroster: Our tint can be applied over the rear defroster lines safely. It won’t
impede the defroster’s function – the electrical lines will still heat the window to clear
frost. In fact, some experts say tint film can actually help distribute the heat more evenly
across the glass. The key is proper installation: we shrink the film to conform to the
defroster lines so it adheres smoothly. When it comes time to remove or replace the tint,
it should be done carefully (with steam, not razor blades) to avoid damaging those lines.
But rest assured, simply having tint on your rear window will not ruin your defroster. You
can still use it as normal.
● GPS, Toll Passes, Keyless Entry, etc.: Neither carbon nor ceramic films contain metal,
so they will not block radio frequency signals. Older metallic tints (or mirror-like
reflective tints) could disrupt signals, but we don’t use those on car windows. You can
use your in-car GPS, smartphone, Bluetooth, garage openers, and key-fob remote just
like before. Likewise, things like satellite radio or a windshield-mounted toll transponder
will work fine with non-metallic tint. (Note: If you do have a metallic reflective tint, it’s
possible to have slight signal interference, but again, our films are non-metallic).
● Rear-View Camera & Sensors: Tinting the rear glass or front windshield (visor strip)
won’t affect your backup camera or any ultrasonic sensors on the vehicle. Those
cameras see visible light and IR, and the slight darkening from tint is not enough to
impede them. We also carefully trim around any antenna elements (some cars have
radio antennas or GPS antennas embedded in rear glass) to ensure everything stays
functional.
In summary, quality window films coexist with your car’s electronics. We specifically use tints
that are advertised as electronics-safe. You get the heat and UV benefits of the film with zero
downsides to your defrosters or gadgets.
